That’s nothing. If you head a bit south on the 89, Afton has the biggest elkhorn arch in the world!

I do not recommend the Mexican joint next to the Big O Tires in Jackson.

Where else could you see a stagecoach next to a fast and/or furious Eclipse.

Also, what is up with that stop light? Why the four separate lights?

The movie came out in 1999, so it’s very well preserved considering the amount of time it has been around. Looks identical to the movie car, or it could be the movie car, I’m sure they made a few.

The door handle vinyl is cut out around the plastic on their car. Must have come off, or they never did it. I was not of the generation for that movie but maybe the show cars had deletes.

You have an eye for the details.

I have not seen any of the F&F movies. When the first came out, my nephews tried to get me to see it. It seemed like it the story line was aimed for a much yo unger crowd.

I admit, I did build out a 2003 Neon when the 2nd movie came out, trying to drum up additional business for our shop. Lesson learned from this was most of the younger F&F fans really don’t have access to the funds for these mods.

Well I do graphics on shows! I am often asked to replicate something from another show they did.

The airport in Afton has a bunch of awesome  Bush planes as well. Turns out after two minutes of googling Aviat is based right there

Then it’s all in the details. I consider my self to have an eye for detail, but I will admit to not comparing the graph ics in detail. I looked for the roof scoop, bi- wing, wheels and body kit. The graphics looked correct to my ey es, but you have a  keen eye for the finer details.

They are smaller, notice where the blue comes down to the side scoop on the real one, stuff like that, the scale is wrong. In fact now that I really look at it, it is totally wrong, look how far the blue reaches back on the real one. It’s a pretty lazy vinyl production job given that they know the model of car and you can measure one!

Once you pointed out the door handle discr epancy, I took a closer look and noticed a big difference in scale. It’s close to a 3/ 4 scale graphic replica.

When we were having race grap hics done for cars, trailers and pit equipment, there were 2 graphics design artists that we relied on for nearly all the initial design and installation. One afternoon, a new local graphics person came in to try and drum up some business. At the time were putting together a new car that had already had the full graphics installed, but hindsight told me that I wanted a decal for the upper portion of the windshield. I explained how I wanted it to follow the arched contour of the windshield, how large it should in height and length and a pho tograph of what it should look like. The next day I was handed a manilla envelope, which was already not a good sign, containing 1:6 scale decal to what I described. Maybe good for a motorcycle fairing, not for a race car, and useless to me. I paid for them, and I am sure they are somewhere in am on g all my obsolete spare graphics from years past.

We always lay our big stuff out on the ground and measure, we always have to check the layout to what each roll has, then we roll them the way we like. As you can see a problem on this scale could be a problem! It costs a lot to reprint too. We wrap trucks and stuff sometimes, I’ve wrapped a lot of random stuff that comes in.

Funny that you mention this. One time we had our graphics for a trailer done by a shop in LA that couldn’t come up and do the install in time for when we needed, so we contracted with the shop that was more local for the install. The shop in LA included a complete diagram for placement of the the graphics and numbered the segments. The local shop seem to have lots of difficulty with the install, causing the LA shop to make some replacement sections and sending them overnight. When we got the trailer back it was obvious that it was not done correctly, according the the diagrams, but it looked close enough not to be an issue.

There are many tricks and issues that you just have to get through experience, we don’t get many apprentices that really have a feel for it. We also use many kinds of vinyl for different applications and they all have their issues. We get clients for shows like the solar show, Chinese companies will bring shit vinyl that you only get one shot with and they fold it up sometimes instead of rolling it. You end up learning tricks because they force you into these horrible situations haha, after that shit you can cruise with the normal stuff. This time in the pic below they wanted to change the graphics overnight and I was like fuck that, so I had them use the fabric stuff that is easy to remove and we double wrapped it before the show, we peeled one off and touched it up in a half hour.

Rookies need to get a start some where, hopefully from working along side someone with the skills and abili ty to teach correct methods and make the adjustments necessary for the job to look proper and professional.

It’s always best to hire   the person with the greatest level of experience, especially when it comes to best way to do the job and the materials necessary to do it correctly. The customer who thinks they know better than the pro is an idiot.

In the union we get green kids and we try them out, we can tell if they might be good at it. We take the ones with promise and give them easy stuff and pair them up with a journeyman etc.. And all the damn clients think they know better, I have refused to be a lead in graphics, I would last two seconds talking to those assholes from Apple or Google. They sit in an office and make decisions, they don’t live in reality. I take the biggest jobs and go off with my partner and they leave us alone, my partner is nuts and a conspiracy theorist, but he is a damn go od applicator and he is never boring to work with:

I like the “leave me out of your stupidity and let me do my job” attitude.

Your partner certainly looks like a character, but as long as the work quality and dependability levels are high, I guess you can dismiss the conspiracy theories and general craziness.

I am sure some days are entertaining and others maddening.

Oh he is amazing, we don’t even have to tell each other what to do. That is for sure our work attitude, but they know we will do it faster and better so they leave us alone. If there is an issue I call the boss and they do something. Frank is like having your own personal Coast to Coast AM radio show, I’m basically in a long term psychological experiment. Well if we ever get to go back to work I will be again! Show biz is a lot of stress and hassle, I want to move to Alaska or something. I’m from Hawaii but I’ve spent too much time there and it’s getting more expensive .

It great when you can go to work and know that the person you are going to be working will be competent and not require supervision or constantly have questions. That’s very difficult to find.

I know a conspiracy theorist, he somehow struck up a conversa tion with me one day while I was returning to my truck after walking my dog around the pond. S ome days I can tolerate this person, other I want to avoid him completely. Early this year, around the start of the pandemic, he started showing up at the dog park with his son’s dog. He was looking for myself and others to spew his theories to, mostly stuff he picks up Youtube. He runs into one day, as I am walking around the pond, and tells me he’s been kicked out of the dog park. Some folks complained that he caused to much stress with his conspiracies and they didn’t want him around if that was going to continue doing. Most are there to relax and have a fun with their dogs and some pleasa nt community socializing.

During the 10 minut es or so he walked with me, he said multiple ignorant conspiracy theories regarding covid-19, to which I insisted were false and that he needed to choose better sources for his information. Each time I corrected his absurd statements, the standard answer was “Well, I dunno”.

I have not seen him since this particular day, I stopped walking around the pond when the temperatures became excessive, and then at the end of June my dog lost his battle with  cancer.

Frank is harmless and is a good guy , he was in the system as a kid and our theory is he has all of this stuff as a coping mechanism. Sorry about your dog, our last bulldog had a tumor and did chemo, he actually beat it in the end. Some time later he had a cut in his mouth that became infected and there was no way to know. He got sick and it was too systemic to save him, it was pretty stressful during the chemo.

I had a roomm ate that was in the juvenile detention system for many years. He was the most normal of any of the roomm ates.

Sorry to hear about the loss of your dog too. My dog did not do the chemo, everything I was told about the cancer he had said that sur gery plus chemo would add maybe 1 year. I considered the quality of life chemo would offer, and I couldn’t see putting him through it. The surgery was done just days before Christmas and he made it just over 6 more months . Although this whole pandemic sucks, I feel fortunate that it allowed me to spend more quality time my dog.
